If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, then you probably care about keeping it looking great. All of that chopping, sautéing, kneading, and baking, after all, is a lot more pleasant when it’s done in a nice, well-designed kitchen. Even cleaning up all of the cooking messes is better when done in a trendy, great looking, top-of-the-line kitchen. Whether your budget is big or small, there are always things you can do to update your kitchen
decor. Below are some of the biggest trends in kitchen design and decorating for 2013. Pick your favorite and get started!

Keep it classic with black and white. A black and white color scheme may sound a little bit old fashioned or even boring, but the truth is the trend is hotter than ever. Tweak it in a way that you like ? whether it’s black and white tiling or white cabinets with black hardware and black countertops. This trend is done best as a classic with a modern update.

Amp up the lighting. There is no surer way to brighten up your kitchen than by installing bright lights in the ceiling. Bright lighting will also make a small kitchen feel bigger, so if you have only a small amount of space, putting in some new light fixtures that let your bulbs shine brighter may be one of your best uses of time and money.

Use some bold colors in your decorating scheme. Bold colors are another option if you don’t want to go the black and white route. (Or you can use bold colors as accent pieces in your black and white color scheme.) Use your wall space to add some pops of bold, bright colors. Make sure your colors match the rest of your kitchen, though!

Or try more subtle hues. 2013 is a great year for subtle colors, too. According to Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, “Warm colors like apricot, yellows and reds are going to continue to be popular in kitchens because they’re comforting and appetite stimulators.” She adds, ?What makes color trends different from year to year is how you put them together in fresh, inventive ways.”

Listen to the experts. Hiring an interior decorator is a great option for those who can afford it, but not everyone has that kind of extra cash lying around. Luckily, some experts have already weighed in about what they expect to see as big trends in 2013. Susan Serra, a Certified Kitchen Designer and the president of Susan Serra associates said the following: Kitchen design is looking very exciting for 2013 as several design philosophies are converging and mixing, resulting in kitchens that are highly personal.? Serra continues, ?With the economy still trudging along without a spring in its step, homeowners want to buy smart for longevity which translates to neutral finishes for big ticket items such as cabinetry, countertops and flooring. Clean, modern styles with warm touches continue their popularity. I do detect a new interpretation of country style which includes the appreciation of nature and natural textures and finishes juxtaposed with more simple cabinet designs?
